A wicked way with words 11 June 2008
Copywriting is all about making communication as powerful as possible. But errors in everyday language and life can also stand out – for different reasons. I was laughing out loud the other day as I looked through Charlie Croker’s book, Lost in Translation. Copyright means I can’t share what made people back away from me in the shop. But it’s a book that celebrates the erroneous, the incorrect and the downright obscene that results from language at cross-purposes with itself. The world would be a poorer place without these confusions. Back in April I congratulated the Typo Eradication League on their goal to make the US an apostrophe-friendly place. They’re still going strong, with followers across the country. I support their mission – as long as they leave the most entertaining errors for us to enjoy. One missing apostrophe or a few misplaced letters can make a whole world of diffidence.
