Why it's back-to-school time for business copywriting 11 September 2025

Autumn is here, as is back-to-school time. I still enjoy this season for its pleasing sense of a fresh start. It’s a feeling I associate with a shiny new pencil case and good things to come. So too with your business content and copywriting strategy. Now is the perfect opportunity to embrace that back-to-school vibe. Here’s why…

Renew your perspective

Back-to-school means new beginnings – not the same old same old! What could you be doing with your copywriting approach to bring fresh energy to your marketing?

This is a great stage in the year to review what’s working and what isn’t. And to start making a list of ideas to try out. For example, if you’ve been trying and failing with your approach to blog content, why not look at ways to simplify your goals? Reducing your content workload could help to create better quality results that are more likely to have an impact.

Refresh your pencil case

Not literally. Unless you want to, of course. This is about renewing and refreshing the resources you rely on to plan, create and distribute your content. Again, consider which ones are working and which ones aren’t. This means all types of resources, whether that is online tools or the brainpower of a colleague or partner.

Is it time to try a new type of marketing resource? Can you look for other people to add to your content planning team to get your content on track for autumn and beyond? One example of this type of approach might be where you review the types of apps you use for distributing newsletters or the resources you use to assess the SEO impact of your online content.

Learn something new

It’s probably something we all did as children. Those moments, at the start of the new school year, when you found yourself outside your old classroom and had to rush to the right place for the start of lessons. Don’t let your content do the same.

Leave the old routes behind and consider other potential approaches. Look again at your business and how you talk about it. Are you relying on old messaging? Do you keep coming back to the same old ways of telling people about what you do? Back-to-school means learning new and interesting things about your business as well as your copywriting strategy.

Consider whether you’re truly in touch with how your customers see your business and what it can do for them. You might gain fresh insights. These can then feed back into your copywriting approach. So you can develop content precisely pitched to the right people and their priorities. Every day’s a school day, after all.

Go to the top of the class

As the new season gets fully underway, see it as a valuable opportunity to look at what you’re really achieving through your content strategy and copywriting approach. What’s creating results and what leaves some room for improvement?

Spend some time looking at where your biggest successes are and how you could apply those elsewhere. For example, has a particular type of article won attention from the right people? What was it about the content or the placement of the content which made it such great news for your business? Can you do more of that type of activity and less of other kinds? Which copywriting ideas are going to take your marketing strategy to the top of the class?

Get old projects off the back burner

With so much to do, it’s only natural that some copywriting ideas you’ve had for your business have been languishing for a while. A new season is the ideal time to take those ideas off the back burner and decide which ones to press on with. You know, those ideas you’ve had for ages, the ones you’d like to follow up with but somehow just haven’t been able to decide on.

As a copywriter, the kinds of paused projects I’ve heard business-owners discuss include a review of their main product brochure tone of voice, new client case studies, a refresh of their website content… As this list shows, any type of content, however critical to a company, can end up on the back burner. Which copywriting project would you like to bring back to life right now?

What’s next for your copywriting strategy?

Make the most of the new season to consider your copywriting approach from a new angle. Whatever works for you, back-to-school for your content shouldn’t be too much like homework. It’s a great opportunity to have fun, reconnect with your content and get better results. Shiny new pencil case optional.
