How to create better relationships 7 April 2009

Things are changing fast. We’ve got information overload and need to make quick choices about what we focus on. In this environment, how we communicate ourselves can make the difference between a strong connection and a broken one. Jay Deragon talks about the power of information to make or break relationships. He says:

“A relationship starts with information that is relevant, valuable and in the interest of the receiver.”

Sounds like someone describing copywriting to me. Writing copy and creating relationships with people seem to be the very same thing.

Why? Because strong copy is always focused on developing a compelling relationship with the reader. Writing copy for any kind of organisation is about turning information into a story, and communicating only what is relevant to a particular audience.

Copywriting is not, as I said in my last post, the act of writing pretty words (though they come in useful now and then). It is the art of speaking directly and powerfully to an audience. That’s about developing strong relationships, whether it’s through an online newsletter, a series of brochures, or a website.

Are you being heard?
