Christmas, with added apostrophes 19 November 2009

Like many people, I’m not a fan of early mentions of the festive season. And also like many others, I become troubled when I see an apostrophe lurking where it’s not meant to be. So I stopped short last month at the sight of a local pub that did a great job of combining both in one medium sized ‘A’ board. There’s a rogue apostrophe hiding in ‘bookings’. And is it my imagination, or has the word ‘Christmas’ been given one too? I think it has. A timely reminder that apostrophes, like Brussels sprouts, should always be doled out with caution.

Very true, lovely observation. Notice how they’re not big enough to really be noticed but they’re definitely there, for good measure…
