Copywriting - a big slice of the cake 29 June 2008

Five years on! In just one month, Green Light will have been providing copywriting services for five years. It’s a nice round number and all those years have taught me a few things. Here are just five reasons why copywriting matters in business:

1. Research has proven that poor writing and spelling have a measurably negative impact on how a company is perceived.
2. Spend money on a sexy-looking website or a gorgeous brochure – then use tired, clichéd content? It adds up to poor value for money. Make the most of your investment with strong copy.
3. Brand – everyone’s talking about it these days. It’s not just for the Coca Colas and Virgins of this world. Create a strong tone of voice that speaks volumes about your company and its aspirations.
4. Speak louder! If your communications could talk, what would they be saying? Do they spell out all the benefits your business can bring – or do they whisper meekly and get ignored in the marketplace?
5. You know what you do – but do your potential customers really understand how you can help them? Use copywriting to create a consistent message in your internal and external communications.

As is fitting for any significant birthday, I’ll be celebrating the occasion with something special – a one-off bonus for new copywriting projects. Much better than a slice of birthday cake.
