March 2024 Google Core Update targets "unhelpful" content 6 March 2024

This month sees a big red flag for websites relying on unoriginal, spammy and purely AI-generated content. The Google March Core Update aims to reduce what it views as “unhelpful” content by 40%.

So what exactly does Google mean by “unhelpful content”? Essentially, anything created with the sole purpose of driving traffic to a site, without any sense of its value for website visitors. The target is webpages that “feel like they were created for search engines instead of people”, as Google itself puts it.

We won’t know the impact for sure until the changes unfold throughout this month. But it should help put the focus back on a copywriting strategy based around interesting, valuable content with an original point of view. And that can only be a good thing.
