I can’t quite believe it’s been seven years since we decided to go to Nottingham’s Old Market Square and ask people to share a word with us. We went out and asked anyone who was walking through the square and was interested to tell us about a word that had meaning for them, then we made a short film about it.

The creation of the film involved hanging out with the lovely Jamie Burton in one of Nottingham’s busiest spots, asking people totally randomly about words. Fairly normal behaviour for a copywriter and a filmmaker!

The words shared were fascinating. While some people went for playful, some for oddly specific and others for more serious choices, all were heartfelt and particular to that person.

The experience showed that if you spend long enough in Nottingham’s Old Market Square, everyone you know will walk through it eventually. Not only did I manage to totally randomly snag the Mayor of Leicester, but look out for an appearance by American comedian and actor, Joe Gatto!

Seven years since that fascinating day have flown by. While trends in the way we communicate are always shifting, words and the way we use them matters more than ever, to people in Nottingham and everywhere else.
