What your emails say about your fashion sense 6 October 2009

If email is the currency of business communication, what value does yours have? I recently heard some interesting things about email through The Women’s Business Club. A recent update (via email, of course) highlighted new research about the phenomenon of email psychology. It seems that 57% of people surveyed said they worry about how intelligent they sound in their emails. Finding a workable style of copy is also at the top of the list, with a large number of people admitting to adapting their language to create their very own email persona.

The flip side of all this is that people are quick to pass judgement on the basis of those seemingly innocent little emails. 33% of people surveyed said they try to guess someone’s age based purely on the language and style the sender uses, while 28% said they try to work out the sender’s status as an authority figure amongst their colleagues…Watch out because your emails are also seen as indicators of your worldly charms, with 11% of respondents saying they make a judgement about the sender’s attractiveness and 8% making an assessment of their fashion sense!

There’s more on this fascinating subject in Michele Martin’s Bamboo Project blog.

So, what exactly is your sent box saying about you?
