Just my type 27 April 2011

A ripple of mourning went around the world yesterday in response to rumours that the world’s last typewriter manufacturer had closed its doors. Apparently this isn’t completely true. There are still some companies out there making typewriters. But it is true that the machine is now an anachronism – not the office staple it once was. So it’s good to see such sentiment for this piece of writing technology.

My own particular type
Pictured above is the typewriter with which I share my office. I rescued it from beside a back street wheelie bin about fourteen years ago (at the risk of a slipped disc) and I’ve enjoyed its well crafted presence ever since. It’s good looking, but it also makes a statement about the changing history of writing and creating content.
