Sad tidings we bring 18 December 2009

Aside from the familiar festive song clichés, the mince pie season brings with it yet another troubling word-based tradition. The sad tiding of the Christmas round robin is what happens when you combine an annual card with a letter with trivia from distant people – and the odd revelation. The round robin is the newsletter of the family world. And, as with a newsletter, the copy can sometimes end up confusing and inadvertently amusing, rather than informing. The archivist of the Christmas round robin is of course Simon Hoggart of the Guardian. If you haven’t enjoyed them already, I recommend his collections of these festive offenders. And just to get you in the spirit of this weird and wonderful seasonal phenomenon, here’s a taster of the best (or worst?) that Mr H has shared.
