How to write in a crowded room 21 May 2009
Terry Pratchett once said: “Writing is the most fun you can have on your own.” However, the truth is that as a copywriter I spend far less time on my own, or thinking purely about the words, than people might think. Even when I am writing alone, the room is crowded. Because I’m keeping in mind all the people I’m writing for.
I’ve said before that writing for business is not simply the act of writing for the hell of it but about creating copy with the customer’s interests at heart. Their content needs to reflect what they want to achieve. Not my own ideas about their business. So the room isn’t just packed with my clients; it’s full of their customers, too. I kind of agree with Mr Pratchett – (copy)writing is some of the most fun you can ever have – but you’re never really on your own.
