And my vote goes to... 4 June 2009

“If you can’t convince them, confuse them.”

So said American President, Harry S. Truman.

Today as the polling stations await voters for the European Parliament Elections, I wonder how many people are clear about their choices.

This is the biggest trans-national election in history (around 375 million European citizens in 27 countries eligible to vote, apparently). But have the politicians given us a clear message about what they’re offering?

Yes, we got the doormat declarations. But have they really made our options any clearer for today? A friend of mine pointed out that one brochure she received showed the candidate wearing the same clothes in every photo. To her, this suggested a quick morning’s work gathering the stock baby-kissing and factory-visiting photos. Perhaps a little unfair, but her perception undermined everything the leaflet said.

Like Harry said, has all this information got us confused rather than convinced?
