Reaching your target 11 December 2008

I’m a sucker for a great analogy.

Two colleagues of mine recently referred to the human tendency to focus on the fear of the recession as “target fixation”. This is an actual technical term in the world of motorcycling for when drivers focus on distractions they want to avoid, instead of the road itself – often with serious consequences.

My friends suggested that this term (apparently coined by World War II fighter pilots) is a powerful reference for how we can let ourselves get drawn away from our goals by thinking too much about the potential impact of the recession.

Instead of helping you avoid risks, this everyday target fixation could actually take you off your chosen path. It’s better to keep looking ahead if you can. So how will you make the most of your communications to reach your goals for 2009?
